Complete DOT Physical Exam Guide

A DOT physical is a driver-safety medical evaluation, not a general employer physical or a CDL road test.

Why this examination exists

Federal commercial-driver medical standards evaluate whether a driver can safely perform the medical demands of qualifying commercial driving. Eligibility and specific rules depend on operating category, license status and individual history. The examiner assesses the person, not just a checklist of numbers.

Before, during and after the visit

Before your appointment, gather identification, medications and any relevant health records. At the appointment, the examiner discusses history and checks blood pressure, vision, hearing, urinalysis and relevant body systems. Afterward the examiner records a certification decision and any necessary follow-up.

Medical certificate versus licensing

A medical examiner’s certificate and a CDL are separate. A driver may need both, but an examiner does not issue or renew a driver’s commercial license. Utah DLD handles state licensing and self-certification categories.

How to avoid preventable delays

Know the expiration date of an existing medical certificate and obtain requested specialist records before visiting. Confirm the clinic’s current exam availability, fee and instructions by telephone. Do not stop medications or assume a specific certification period.

Official references and next steps

This educational material is not medical advice, not an examiner’s individual qualification decision, and not a guarantee of a medical certificate. Ask a licensed clinician about your medical condition. Federal and Utah guidance may change.
