CDL Class A, B and C: Medical Qualification Basics
CDL license classes describe commercial vehicle privileges, while medical qualification depends on the driver’s operation and applicable rules.
What license classes describe
Class A, B and C generally distinguish commercial vehicle configurations, weight and passenger or hazardous material situations. The class by itself does not establish every medical certification obligation.
Medical requirements arise from operating context
Medical examination duties depend on federal or state safety regulations, driving type, excepted categories and current self-certification. A driver with a certain license class may have different requirements depending on actual commerce.
Separate qualification from licensing tests
A DOT physical does not substitute for CDL knowledge testing, driving skills, endorsements or the state licensing application process. Drivers must maintain each applicable requirement.
Use the correct agencies
Check Utah DLD for CDL categories and application requirements, and FMCSA for federal medical qualification standards and the National Registry. The medical examiner makes an individual certification decision.
