Medications and DOT Physical Exams
A DOT medical examiner reviews medications because some treatments and conditions can affect safe commercial driving.
Report the complete medication list
Bring prescription medicines, nonprescription drugs, supplements and dosages that you use or have recently used. An incomplete list makes it harder for the examiner to evaluate potential effects on safe driving.
Individualized safety evaluation
A medication is not necessarily an automatic disqualifier in every context. The examiner considers its purpose, effects, clinical stability and any documentation required under current regulations.
Do not stop treatment to pass an exam
Stopping or changing prescribed medicine without your treating professional’s advice can create real health and safety risks. Seek medical guidance instead of following online rumors about which medicines ‘fail’ a DOT physical.
Helpful documentation
A current treating-clinician summary can be helpful for some medications and medical conditions. Ask the office which records are relevant to your circumstances.
Official references and next steps
This educational material is not medical advice, not an examiner’s individual qualification decision, and not a guarantee of a medical certificate. Ask a licensed clinician about your medical condition. Federal and Utah guidance may change.
