DOT Physical Hearing Requirements
Hearing is evaluated in a DOT physical because a commercial driver must meet applicable hearing qualification rules or hold an authorized exemption.
Hearing checks used during the examination
FMCSA medical exam procedures permit specified hearing assessments such as a whisper test or audiometric testing. The examiner documents the method and results within the regulated examination.
Using hearing aids
Drivers who use hearing aids should bring them and any requested relevant testing information. The medical qualification record may include restrictions or documentation appropriate to the individual’s circumstances.
Exemptions and individualized questions
Some drivers who do not meet a standard may have access to a federal exemption process. The examiner cannot simply waive every rule independently. Verify the relevant current process directly with FMCSA.
Before the visit
If you have prior hearing testing or an exemption, bring supporting records and ask the clinic which documents apply.
