Urinalysis During a DOT Physical
Routine urinalysis during a DOT physical is a medical screening component, not the same process as a separate DOT employer drug test.
What routine urinalysis measures
The FMCSA medical examination report includes urine values such as specific gravity, protein, blood and sugar. These findings may provide clues that deserve further medical consideration; they are not in themselves a diagnosis.
What it does not establish
The routine urinalysis should not be marketed as a standard federally regulated drug screen. Employers may arrange separate drug and alcohol testing under different requirements and procedures.
When the examiner needs more information
An unusual urine result may lead to questions, clinical follow-up or documentation depending on the broader health picture. The certified examiner uses medical judgment under the applicable standards.
How to prepare
Follow ordinary health advice and your treating clinician’s instructions. If there is a medical issue that might affect your evaluation, bring relevant records rather than attempting to change test results.
