CDL Medical Self-Certification in Utah
Commercial drivers must select the appropriate Utah CDL self-certification category based on how they operate their vehicle.
Interstate versus intrastate operations
Interstate commerce can include crossing a state line, transport to or from another country, or a segment of a shipment whose origin or destination is beyond Utah. An in-state route alone does not always establish intrastate classification.
Excepted versus non-excepted status
Utah DLD identifies four categories combining interstate/intrastate and excepted/non-excepted operation. These categories can change medical certificate requirements and license restrictions. Do not choose a category merely because it seems cheaper or simpler.
Why the recorded category matters
The state licensing agency relies on self-certification information when applying medical qualification requirements. A change in the type of commercial operation may require an update to the driver’s record.
Official forms and help
Use the current Utah DLD CDL medical self-certification form and official category descriptions. Ask the licensing agency how the rules apply to a particular operation; an exam clinic cannot issue a CDL self-certification category for you.
