What Happens During a DOT Physical?

During a DOT physical, the examiner reviews your health history and performs required examinations before determining commercial-driver medical qualification.

Arrival and health-history review

The process typically begins with identification, examination paperwork and a review of health conditions, medications, prior treatment and any supporting records. Complete and accurate history is important because the examiner evaluates safety-sensitive driving work.

Vision, hearing and vital signs

The examiner records blood pressure and pulse, measures or assesses vision and hearing, and documents whether corrective lenses or hearing aids are used. Specific federal standards and available alternative pathways may apply.

Urinalysis and physical systems

Routine urine testing in the examination includes certain clinical measurements; it is not interchangeable with a federally regulated employer drug screen. The physical exam reviews relevant body systems and potential concerns affecting driving safety.

Certification and any next steps

The examiner determines whether certification is appropriate, including any term shorter than 24 months or a need for additional records. The examiner’s decision is individualized; the office cannot promise a certificate before the evaluation.
