Diabetes and DOT Medical Certification

Diabetes does not automatically rule out DOT medical certification. The relevant evaluation depends on treatment, complications and federal requirements.

Individual assessment

The examiner considers diabetes control, relevant complications and whether symptoms could impair safe driving. Medications, recent care and specialist notes may be important. Website copy cannot determine any one driver’s qualification.

Insulin-treated drivers

FMCSA has a specific pathway and documentation requirements for certain insulin-treated diabetes mellitus cases. Drivers should consult the current federal forms and their treating clinician before scheduling an exam; the process is not identical to that for every person with diabetes.

What records may help

A treatment summary, medication list, recent clinician evaluations and condition-specific forms can reduce delays when requested. Confirm exact records before the visit; bringing sensitive information through an ordinary public contact form is inappropriate.

Certification is individualized

Only the authorized medical examiner can decide whether applicable qualification standards are satisfied. Drivers with complications or additional medical conditions may need further evaluation.
