Sleep Apnea and DOT Medical Certification

Sleep-related breathing problems are considered when they may affect alertness and safe driving; evaluation is based on an individual’s situation.

What the examiner may ask

The examiner may discuss snoring, daytime sleepiness, treatment history and other sleep-related concerns in a broader medical assessment. A website cannot diagnose obstructive sleep apnea or decide how it affects a driver.

Records and treatment

Drivers receiving treatment may be asked for relevant medical documentation or treatment information. Bring existing clinician records if requested and avoid discontinuing prescribed treatment before the visit.

Avoiding blanket claims

Not every driver with sleep apnea is automatically disqualified, and there is no reason to represent a single questionnaire score as a universal federal disqualification rule. The examiner applies relevant standards and professional judgment.

Preparing for evaluation

If you have been evaluated or treated for a sleep disorder, contact the clinic about any documents to bring. Discuss health decisions with your treating clinician.
