DOT Physical Vision Requirements

The DOT vision assessment checks visual acuity and other aspects of vision relevant to safe commercial driving, including when corrective lenses are used.

What is checked

Under the applicable federal framework, distant visual acuity and field of vision are examined. Drivers who wear corrective lenses can be tested with their correction; requirements and qualifying alternative pathways vary with circumstances.

Bring the vision aids you use

Bring glasses or contact lenses that you normally use to drive. Drivers with eye conditions or specialist evaluations should check whether additional optometrist or ophthalmologist records are required.

Alternative qualification processes

Some individuals may have an applicable federal vision alternative or evaluation process. Do not interpret a website checklist as a final determination of your eligibility. An examiner and, when appropriate, a vision specialist assess the relevant evidence.

How to prepare

If you recently changed corrective lenses or have an ongoing eye condition, ask about needed documentation before your appointment. Avoid unsupported promises that a particular prescription will automatically pass.
