What Happens if You Do Not Qualify for a DOT Medical Certificate?
A medical examiner may decline certification or defer a decision when a driver does not currently satisfy the applicable requirements or more information is needed.
Different possible outcomes
An examiner can issue an appropriate certification, request more information, determine that certification is not appropriate under current standards, or direct a driver to seek further evaluation. These situations are not interchangeable and should not be labeled simply as ‘failing’ without explanation.
Understand what additional records are requested
Ask the examiner to explain which finding or missing documentation affects the decision and what the next legitimate step is. Work with your treating professional when further care or specialist evidence is appropriate.
Avoid unsafe shortcuts
Do not conceal medical history, alter medications without medical advice, or seek a promised certification from an unverified provider. The medical evaluation is designed to protect the driver and public.
Check legitimate exemptions and next steps
In some circumstances a federal exemption or additional evaluation pathway may be relevant. Check official FMCSA requirements and the licensing agency rather than relying on unsourced guarantees.
