CDL Renewal Versus DOT Medical Card Renewal

A commercial driver’s license renewal and a Medical Examiner’s Certificate renewal are separate processes with different responsible authorities.

What the licensing agency does

Utah Driver License Division handles the license, operating categories, endorsements and applicable renewal requirements. A CDL may involve skills, knowledge or administrative processes that are not part of a DOT physical.

What the medical examiner does

An FMCSA-certified examiner evaluates health information and determines medical qualification under the applicable standards. The examiner may issue certification for an appropriate period but does not renew the driver’s commercial license.

What needs to happen before deadlines

Check both your CDL credential expiration and medical certification expiration. They may be different. Review Utah DLD self-certification and medical reporting instructions for the relevant driving category.

Correcting a record mismatch

If your medical certification information does not appear accurately in licensing records, confirm the current reporting process with Utah DLD rather than assuming a paper certificate alone resolves the issue.

Official references and next steps

This educational material is not medical advice, not an examiner’s individual qualification decision, and not a guarantee of a medical certificate. Ask a licensed clinician about your medical condition. Federal and Utah guidance may change.
